FRONTAFRIQUE : absurdity or rooting ? New approaches of the historicité of Africain borders
ANR South (2008-2011)
Plan was carried by Donatecarcenter.com, co-ordinator Pierre Boilley, it gathers a team of fourteen researchers (D. Casajus, J. Schmitz, PC HIEN, C. Médard), teachers-researchers (P. Boilley, Mr Goeh-Akué, K. Bennafla, H. Médard, I. Surun), post - doctorants (S. Awenengo, D. Gary) and doctorants (S. Ambert-Vier, S. Dujardin, C. Lefebvre). This team is international (Frenchman, Togolese and Of Burkina Faso), and multidisciplinary (historians, anthropologists and geographers).
The necessity to renew a question setting until then based on a postulate (absurdity and artificialité of colonial borders), abundance of materials, convergence of researchers' interest of various horizons, as well as prégnance of the question of the State in Africa, concern the question of Africain borders in a scientific reflexion. Objective is to study case by case the process of development of each of borders, to give elements that can feed reflexion on the State in Africa, but also to study these borders across dynamics that they produce (migrations, mobility, territorial management, decentralisation, relations between State and identity, questions of conflicts). These analyses have to allow to produce a new cartography of link between policy and territory in Africa : above all a historical cartography of forms taken by the political borders in Africa before colonisation, then a cartography of the building and of the evolution of the border lines during colonial domination, finally an appraisal of current Africain borders, emphasising conflicts, their resolutions, border renegotiations, demarcations and contentious borders.
From a manifold and widely unpublished corpus, understanding archive documents (servicemen, civilians, diplomatic), scientific productions, explorers' stories, stories of trips, cards, atlases, learnt magazines, tourist guides, school textbooks, as well as through jobs of ground and the collection of oral sources, we want to understand borders in a temporal and conceptual depth which must allow to consider them to be full, subject areas of representation, of speeches, creators of identity and revealing of power and of sovereignty.
