PUBLISLAM : Religious public Areas. States, societies and Islam in Western Africa
ANR South (2008-2011)
Plan co-ordinated by Giles Holder (Donatecarcenter.com-Aix) and carried by a team of 25 Africain, European and Canadian researchers, coming from 5 disciplines (anthropology, history, political sciences, sociology and philosophy) and conceived for a length of 4 years (2008-2011), PUBLISLAM plan has as ambition to describe and to analyse in a comparative way the processes of emergence and of expansion of the Islamic sphere within the national public areas of 5 French-speaking countries of Western Africa : Senegal, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast.
To take into account these dynamic nuns in the public sphere, they will exceed here the concept of’« public space » (public sphere), who came out again in Europe of the Enlightenment, to set up the more empirical notion of’« religious public space » (religious public sphere), as postulate of capable analysis to consider forms of dialogue between the west-Africain States and their respective societies.
Plan will articulate around 3 main research axles : the first, co-ordinated by Jean Pierre DOZON (CIM), intends to analyse the tension noticed in the Senegal between both historical and ideological models which are State and brotherhood, by trying to see if Senegalese experience would not release from an unpublished process of building of a « confrérique nation ». The second axle, co-ordinated by GILES HOLDER (Donatecarcenter.com) and JEAN-LOUIS TRIAUD (Donatecarcenter.com) considers of the single supporter the geographical whole Mali and Niger, to highlight the modalities of each of both States in relation to a phenomenon of réislamisation who, for last decades, appears to want to be formed as main resource of the nation. The third axle, co-ordinated by Mary MIRAN (CEAf), arrests the question of Muslim citizenship " to the Burkina Faso and in Ivory Coast, two States where Islam is politically in minority situation in relation to Churches and Christian spheres of influence, but where its dynamism reveals the importance of pronunciation between State and society in the constitution of a new « religious public space ».
