The islands of memory. Plant of pictures and writing of history in the churches of the lake Tānā, Éthiopie, XVIITH - XVIIITH century
By Claire Bosc-Tiessé
Paris, Publications of the Sorbonne, on 2008
This work, the first to offer a historical analysis of the Ethiopian art of the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries across number of unpublished documents – pictures, columns, charters and land documents – studies the building of civil buildings or ecclésiaux, the monumental construction sites of decoration, the making up a page of the cycles of illuminations and the constitution of libraries. This history of places, objects and of painting of the lake Tānā puts to include cultural inheritance and historical knowledge on whom lean artistic orders as political action of the kings in the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries. Between conflicts of stories, land claims and artistic auspices, the author clears the successive strata of the writing of the history of the kingdom, of the manufacture of pictures, illuminations and frescoes of churches, and of the building of a royal memory.
