Research course

- Thesis supported on October 7th, 2006 in Aix-en-Provence, very honourable «mention with congratulations of jury unanimously », under title : Servile resistance in the colonial society of the island Bourbon (1750-1848), conducted by Mrs Colette Dubois
Jury :
Mrs Colette Dubois, Professor of Universities, Aix-Marseille I
Mr Hubert Gerbeau, State doctor (Aix-Marseille III) (reporter)
Mr Jean-Michel Deveau, Professor of Universities
Mr Jacques Weber, Professor of Universities, Nantes (Reporter and Foreman)

My research plan offers to deepen the step adopted in thesis to reach 3 targets :
- Bring in the study from bourbonnaises resistance from perspectives specialists in comparative linguistics
- Enrich the history of slavery in the Indian ocean by stressing its specificity
- Think on a regional scale of the question of insubordination of the slave labour in the mutation which gets involved between slavery – engagisme - free job

My reflexion articulates around 2 main axles

Centre 1 : Establish a system referent supported on the basis of most sprawling knowledge on the question of servile resistance with as foundations the same methodology, ground, theoretical frame as those developed in thesis. In order to do that he would be necessary :
- to enrich the base by including into it on one hand new, unpublished sources coming from unexploited funds, on the other hand from new informative parametres by having establishing in anticipation norms of categorisation compatible with the base.
- to develop the statistical treatment by multiplying the multivarious analyses which will allow to organise factors into a hierarchy in the study of a resistance and to notice the frequency of some combinations of factors.

I envisage at the same time to sit this system referent
- to include into the base of data relating to the island Maurice who was the nerve centre of French Mascareignes from 1715 till 1810, what would allow study to register in an aim at the same time globalisante and specialist in comparative linguistics.
- Besides, to poll well the mutation of dependency and of uprisings at long time, the chronological period will be spread by including 18 entirely and the 19è centuries. I will try to know so if the change of status has an influence on means of contestation and how.

Centre 2 : The second axle articulates with the first section of research plan. From the system referent established on the zone of Mascareignes, I will apply this method of investigation to all areas of the Indian ocean concerned by migrations forced during and after pro-slavery period.

- In space term, it means to exclude no territory since the Zones of departure up to the societies of reception. I could so work on networks and influxes of immigrants by differentiating the time and the space of departure (coastal interface), time and space of transit (maritime space) finally the time and the space of the earth of reception and their different contributions on the themes of resistance.
- In term of time, it implicates to blend and to include different historical and cultural contexts, to grab breaks and factual woofs specific for these different territories. (question of the dating of the abrogation of slavery, to include different temporalities and realities …)
- In methodological term, next to statistical approach, I hope I can follow personal routes of insane, treated workers, liberated and reused under status (enlisted men) to poll the way they temper alienation by job.

At the crossroads of these questionings, the question of racial representations will be an axle of priority research. As part of trade, friendly or bellicose relations, how arrest European and indigenous once past the stadium of the first discoveries ? How milking, slavery and workers' migrations impregnate the nature of their relations ? Behind the question of resistance, how are read the modifications of the report of force between these different groups ? Signs of colonial epoch do already be seen there ?
Also this axle will try to deepen the dimension diasporique of these migrations, to include mechanisms and itineraries. Is it possible to speak about Africain diaspora in some territories, about Indian diaspora and under which conditions ? To feed the history of these connections, to clarify better the precise origin of these migrants very badly known and seldom approached, I will try to cross sources : maritime, stories of trip, judicial, administrative, …
