Research course

Reflexion around heritage

Since my association in 2000, in UR run by M.C. Cormier-Salem (IRD), I orientated my researches on the processes of creation of a natural heritage, so much institutional point of view as local communities. The objects of my researches include the areas accesses of which are regulated by religious principles : trees and sacred, source forests, aquatic areas... The management of these areas and also available resources knew evolutions in touch with sociocultural, historical and environmental factors which an analysis on long length allows to highlight. The role of the state and of institutions, that of local communities, and individuals are examined in turn and their shown possible interlocking. _Après have worked on the definition of the notion of heritage from the point of view of the inhabitants on the south of the Benin and of Togo (cultural aerie Aja-Tado), I try now to grab different stakes which develop around (plant or animal) kinds or around places " Patrimonialisés ". The policies of protections of the environment are under consideration (colonial epoch and after independence) to show intercommunications between the different actors, so much local point of view as at national and international levels. The study of land regime allows to include many litigations which appear between possessors of rights on the earth and farmers concerning the plantations of trees, litigations in increase further to the increasing population pressure, the lack of available lands, the privatisation of the domains of the State (palm groves chosen by the set of Allada) and in the superimposing of two legal systems for the taking over of lands. Studies of ground to the different categories of actors (forested guards, forested farmers, coalmen, village nurserymen, representatives of associative middle, political institutions, religious representatives) continued until July, 2006.

The sacred sites in question

The studied natural sacred sites split between the south of the Benin and of Togo. This zone is at the level of the break of the domain of humid dense forest and of arrival up to the sea of the trainings of Guinean savannahs ("Dahomey Gap" or “savannah of the Benin”). The still present forested islets are generally places of worship sacralisation of which allowed the creation of a sported training (the current dynamics of vegetation is forested) and / or its maintaining when it is about a relic of the ancient forested place setting. Currently, in front of increasing land pressure, these sites think they are often threatened. Further to their deterioration, they make the object of various stakes in touch with environmental policies, actions of the NGO and of the scientists without forgetting local political and religious powers. They attend so more and more frequent interventions of the services of the Forestry authority which recommend the "restoration" of these trainings by the planting of useful forested kinds, either indoors even of islets, or in periphery to establish a zone of protection between forests and cultures. My researches have as objective to accomplish diagnoses of the current state of conservation of studied sites while taking their history into consideration in long length : origin of the creation of sites, evolution of their management in time and in space. This stage of observation and of analysis of processes will be able to be of use for the actors of the conservation of heritage to define the means of action best adapted to assure the preservation of these sites. In the final, it will be a question of analysing if this actions are pertinent in material not only of maintaining of biodiversity but also of conservation of a natural and cultural heritage in the course of structuring.

These researches on the sacred sites register as part of the collective plan financed by INRA over 3 years (2004-2006) continuation in the answer in 2002 to a call of offer of the Institute Frenchman of Biodiversity called “the natural sacred sites : " conservation of biodiversity” as source of economic and social stakes (studies of case in the Benin, Burkina Faso and Togo)”. The results of this ended supporting plan are under way of publication. the final report delayed to IFB is partly available on Hal-shs.
