Summary of thesis
At the Seereer du Sine and of the Baby-coast in the Senegal, the loincloths of weaved cotton are objects which keep the women (married and initiated) and appearances of which they manage entirely in the main rituals of passage or of « cycle of life » (birth, introduction, marriage, death). This thesis will redraw the routes which borrow these textile industries, since their manufacture up to their exit on the occasion of village formalities. By describing the way loincloths cross family boots in which they are carefully kept, in rituals, it's all one to me section of the social organisation to seereer that I offer to highlight, the pragmatic point of view of the actresses. So, I will show how biographical courses of objects – this social life which have things – cross biographical feminine courses.
Some hypotheses could be supported in the course of two ethnographic missions of four and ten months each (2000-2001). The attachment which the women seereer have as these objects, as well as the complexity of exchanges putting them into play was confirmed. In speeches, the loincloth is a witness of the ancient time. It is the object par excellence which represents "tradition" and identity. In the course of formalities, it is the sign which marks the entrance in ritual time. It is, finally, what « made run the women » : circulating continuously between them, there is the good which it is necessary to acquire, which it is necessary to keep sheltered from looks in the intimacy of rooms, which it is necessary to bring in the slightest of festivities. Invisible wealth, treasure in the bottom of a boot, the loincloth, when it comes into sight in rituals, becomes what is seen. He hides the persons, parries the dancers and the powerfuls, runs the risk on the walls of houses.
A broad place will therefore be dedicated to the study of ritual action in thesis. These cloths, on which crystallise the representations of a collective past, speak about the past time of a religion seereer on the way to being subordinated to other confessions. But loincloths recall individual pasts just as much : in the relations which take shape the time of a ritual between those who bring loincloths and other partners of exchange (persons who are veiled, who are bedecked with it to dance, who display them or manipulate them) different levels of feelings are conjugated and return in the living, in the experience of the actresses.
By studying in most near the density of female networks mobilised around then in the course of rituals, I will be capable of showing on which modes of the relations of friendship, of consanguinity and of alliance, of neighbourhood or of age group decline such as they are lived. Confronted with local speeches or with models of the anthropologists, this approach is meant to be a dynamic exploration of the modalities of ritual action and social practices. It will be a question of exceeding the simple figurative usage of network word which will be envisaged under the angle of the loincloth as mediator of particular correlations. Quantitative data come from a specific inquiry led to feminine about sixty. The computer processing of results will be envisaged only if it turns out to be necessary for the analysis of forms of links of loincloths listed between them.
Cross looks and methods on practices (ritual usage of loincloths and conditions of their exit) and what they procreate in different registers (emotions, ritual effectiveness, references to tradition as to identity, contexts of experience, individual strategies, modes of actualisation of particular relations), such is the stake of this thesis.
