Within populations jóola of the Senegal and of Guinea-Bissau, between forests and mangrove swamps, the country jamaat to whom it is a matter here master key for a true conservatory of the village institutions and of worship dedicated in powers altars of which take control of the territory.« Thrown on the earth »by the Creator, master of the sky and of the rain, these authorities circumscribe so finely the social and symbolic space as, even if the converted villagers refrain from sacrificing to it, they can hardly escape from their jurisdiction. However, no more than its neighbours, this region avoided the trials and tribulations of modern history and the missionary firm. How to include the permanence and the vitality of the ritual activity linked to this ancient worship ? In such society avoiding widely the hold of the state administration, to answer this question assumes to examine nearly the way, at every occasion, the links weave and re-weave which tie the inhabitants to their " earth » and in its misadventures. To follow meanders by it, the reader is invited to enter the deep of village columns and of observations gathered by the author during his stays repeated on the ground.
