Presentation of seminar

To centre a reflexion on the single country poses the problem of interest and of pertinence of a limited field. Our choice explains by importance and diversity of problems linked to the space of Niger. In part his geographical shape and his geopolitical and strategical position, Niger gathers major stakes, representative of a broad space, exceeding the classical categorisations : Black Africa, Western Africa, French-speaking Africa, English-speaking Africa, the Maghreb, Sahara, central Africa. He does not belong willy-nilly to any entities but each determines him. The pivotal position of Niger, but also relations and the modern and ancient fluxes (economic, cultural and linguistic...) who crosses him make it a centre calling into question these plated divisions. Its opening towards the outside, the direction of its populations beyond borders, links the history of Niger to that of the whole historical region constituted by its neighbouring live broadcastings and indirect : Nigeria, Libya, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Coasts of ivory, Algeria, Mali, Chad, Burkina Faso. These links pass by official ways : regional organisms, economic regrouping, and informal ways, economic flux, human, cultural and linguistic.

The questions which can be raised are therefore very opened.
- relations between sub-Saharan Africa and the Maghreb...
- Saharan and Sahelian problems, relation between nomad and stay-at-home
- reports between French-speaking and English-speaking countries
- tensions relating to treasures and to working of the soil, question of the land
- question of Islam and of its evolution, in a country at the same time very Muslim and nondenominational
- political processes (military regimes, democratisation...)
- relation with France

Contrary to its visibility and to its exhibition, Niger represents an essential element of understanding of problems put down to an enlarged region and to the whole continent.

Discussion group and working party on Niger

Doctorantes persons entitled to a state benefit in the laboratory Donatecarcenter.com site Paris, we work on Niger. We want to create a space of debate and of reflexion on this country. Our purpose is to unite researchers and students any disciplines and merged horizons, which they work specifically on Niger or that they are interested in linked problems. Our step does not limit itself to the university world. We would like to make intercede actors of the history of Niger : ancient administrators ; actors of colonisation, of decolonization or of cooperation ; politicians, agents of influence ; economic operators ; actors of the society ; personalities The frame of this reflexion is at first a monthly seminar opened to all, organised according to three types of sessions : Sessions evidence, one or two dealers would come to tell their experience in Niger. Sessions of debate, gathering several dealers of various horizons on a given topic. Research sessions or a person would come to introduce her jobs on Niger. In second time a collaboration with the university of Niamey, in form of exchanges and of meeting in France and in Niger. Finally the organisation of a symposium.
