Program NATIONAL CENTRE FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH - IDA "Society of Information"
Search party : Anaïs Wion (linked historian, researcher, Donatecarcenter.com-PARIS) co-ordinator, Denise Ogilvie (chief conservative of heritage in the Archives of France), Claire Bosc-Tiessé (historian, NATIONAL CENTRE FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, Donatecarcenter.com-Aix), Wendy MacKay (head of research, NATIONAL CENTRE FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, INRIA-futur), Olivier Tourny (ethnomusicologue researcher, NATIONAL CENTRE FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, in LMS)
The promotion, conservation and accessibility of Ethiopian documentary heritage are three elements of this research programme.
It is a question of creating and of putting to the test a system of description adapted in :
* from heterogeneous sources of nature : manuscripts containing at the same time liturgical texts, historical texts and notes of legal and state-owned nature ; from oral sources (formalized institutional transmission, stories), religious and secular musical traditions ; iconographic documents (wall painting, banners and illuminations).
* from sources kept in institutions of various nature (religious establishments, libraries, services of archives) in Ethiopia, in France and in England, as well as from sources and documents kept by researchers.
* from sources from which current modes of descriptions differ.
The purpose of this pilot plan is to define a descriptive architecture and methods of numeration allowing to describe and to establish links between sources of nature various but recovering from a rich and consistent heritage. Possibilities given by language XML are the most adapting to take up this challenge. This first institutional support will allow to measure the feasibility of this firm, to search sources of financing and lasting collaboration, to set up the structure of database and finally to imagine one or new interfaces, taking principles into account of "augmented reality" and of participative conception.
It is a research tool created from a reflexion on sources and on their roles in the training and the transmission of knowledge. This observatory of resources can allow to increase tenfold the possibilities of answers to questions put down to the Ethiopian sources.
