Plan « to Write the history of the Horn of Africa (XIIITH - XXITH s.) : texts, networks and societies » is carried by a team of 27 members (6 foreign colleagues, 7 French teachers-researchers, 3 post - doctorants, 11 doctorants).
The ambition of this plan is to make appear internationally a new way of writing the history of the Horn of Africa, in break with researches and syntheses led in frames defined by States-nations and by going out of classical division between Christian kingdom, Muslim sultanates and foreign societies. Theses supported in France for these last years on the history of the Horn manifest the resurgence of this field of studies and there are probably today very few countries with such potential of researchers (predominantly of young researchers). Our plan will have to give body to this « French school » and the publication of expected results to impose it on international level.

Research topics The places of power : on the basis of a criticism of the historiography conceiving power as emanating from a centralised State, it will be a question of comparing the places of power (political capitals, cities markets, places of worship) to establish a new historical geography and policy of the region. The zones of contact : our inquiries will choose border areas with a big cultural mixing of sexes, changeable political influence and in forms of "insubstantial ", religious or mythical overlapping . Networks : the historical and anthropological study of networks (of trade and milking, royal churches, Christian men of letters and Muslims, holy places and pilgrimages) will be in the middle of plan.
Teams
Plan of total history, our programme links to the historians of the anthropologists, geographers and of the archaeologists. He leans back on a transverse research on a corpus of written sources (team : « Archives of the Horn of Africa ») on which we work in an international frame for two years. Let us remind that the Horn is the region of Africa where exist the most ancient written and handwritten traditions. These archives consist of acts, charters, notes registered students of margin in manuscripts (there ge' ez, amharique, oromo, argobba, Arabic), documents which will be collected and organised in the form of relational database.
The basics of job will be first that of inquiries of ground, linking specialists of different disciplines on objects constructed together - the only means to achieve a true multidisciplinary approach. To structure these researches, two teams, while sharing mentioned topics, will work on specific territories. Team " L' Ifat et ses réseaux"
Ifat and Harar cut again current regions of Éthiopie, of Érythrée, of Djibouti and of Somaliland. Big absentee of the historiography of the region, because in the middle of the Muslim Horn, these territories will be studied across the history of networks of men of letters and of worship of the saints and that of commercial networks in long length, in their connections with big international trade. By studying forms of the power of a regional point of view, the team will try to understand better the internal political functionings of societies. Combining analysis of texts, oral and archaeological sources, she will put the emphasis on the production of historical knowledges, regional exchanges and question of milking and of slavery before the XIXth century, completely unaware untill today.
Besides jobs of ground, plan will fan out, over four years, around following actions : horny seminar of Africa : monthly seminar for the French researchers, enlarged in the totality of the team once a year. database « Archives of the Horn of Africa » : fed by all members of the team and constituted in network (Bets / Aix, Oriental Institute of Beirut, university of Addis Ababa, university of Illinois) it will be, at the end of four years, in free access on the web to broadcast results and research materials. two round tables with mi - course (at the end of 2007) : on the handwritten texts (Arab or ajami) of Muslim culture, on the nature of exchanges between central and southern Éthiopie. international symposium with acts (at the end of 2010) : this symposium will be held at the end of 4 years of the programme to introduce results in front of an international audience. publication of synthesis on the Horn of Africa (2011) : the writing by two or three members of the team of a synthesis on the history of the Horn will come to fill up the complete absence of work of this type in French-speaking domain.
