Singularity and technology
Organised by nadine Wanono (Donatecarcenter.com-Ivry) and Francis Rousseaux (IRCAM)
Seminar "Singularity and Technologies", having enlivened by nadine Wanono (anthropologist film-maker) and Francis Rousseaux (computer scientist) was created in September, 2005 on the basis of a research programme worked out together. It was principally at home held Suger, in the places of Ircam as well as in the Museum of the Quay Branly.
Stakes of seminar
Program 2007-2008
Singularity and Technologies The topic of singularity and of its report crossed with synthesis and technology made the object of inauguration season 2005/2006, before evolving in the direction of investigation on collections (season 2006/2007).
In 2007/2008, seminar will follow its development by carrying the inquiry into questioning.
Piaget, in an effort to rationalise and to differentiate the categories from figurales collections, clears the famous abstracted landmark form / space-time. But this description does not exhaust the phenomenon which Bachelard (The poetics of the space) calls imagining, to know creative invitation that addresses us presence to be imagined and to us ressouvenir, as soon as it glitters in collections (see Deleuze also in Proust and signs). The collection blunts the object by making felt us that it is always already re-collected and poétisé, its categorisation was always haunted by other attracteurs than form and space-time abstract. To support in presence is a creative activity which is allowed to it impose neither by definite absence, nor by crossed inactualité or to come. Having barely discharged the pressure of rationality, presence finds its saturated density and opens (without exteriority) to include the ressouvenir and the imagining, shading off the privilege of the supporting and making absence immediately a particular quality of the gift. Figurales collections do not stop bloody idiot of - appear, to reconfigurer therefore. And it is while a question is suddenly obvious, without telling and as the heart of imagining... How a questioning or a paradox do they cross suddenly the structure of presence ?

Ontogeny of a musical ear".
I wanted to reconstruct the way some repeated listenings constructed landmarks, how these landmarks got organised in network which is very busy during successive listenings, which sometimes changes, or even destroys itself by some particularly disturbing listenings. Today, it is this network which co-ordinates the way I receive the music, of which I listen to it, remember it and finally of whom I appreciate it. Result of years of meticulous, microscopic and incoherent attention, it was built by obeying laws of gravitation which I smell demanding, without understanding them really. I so weaved a network of 200 notable musical events, most very located, which give an account of listener's ear of the end of the 20è century. I tried to tell this story, thinking that if history is necessarily unique itself, its general diagramme is not it undoubtedly. I would like to speak about this plan, and to comment on some examples drawn of this text

Organic vs Numerical
This group creates a texture of organic synthesis, concept that the artist called " numerical skin " or " numerical flesh ". Since 1996, the artist hired a reflexion on the possibilities of expressing the sensitive of the body and of the human being across the use of new technologies linked to the computer tool. In his videos, Miguel Almiron captures numerically real organs, parts of the body which he transforms, puts in movement and sublime with the aid of tools of high-tech such as software 3D or scanner 3D (CyberWare). The picture which the artist shows us in his videos recalls the interiority of the body. It seems that beings and often sexual organs are conjugated, blend and are transformed to give birth to new organic forms.

Numeration, Collections and Exchange of posts
Scientific and technical developments redefine the space of creation. Communications media transform in an observable way the contribution of the artists and at once the quality of innovative experimentation. Numeration makes easier new forms of production, broadcasting, participation and calls into question the notion of culture as well as the traditional balances of the industries of culture and of the arts of the stage. With the transfer of knowledges and of cultural heritages by coding, numeration amplifies the possibilities of exploration and of innovation.

The peculiar system of monotheism Formant system by means of their difference, graduated on three Indo-European functions, or monotheism () translate polytheism from religious or genealogical point of view by other means : procreate the unit of the people from a numerous ethnic, operate on gesture of the saving warrior, establish double celestial / human law. Saturated system, there is not fourth monotheism. But crossing the corpus, a prophetic equivalent hole, an oracle of opening, three stories of crossings Exodus, Metanoia, Hijra, or revolutions orphans named turns away from this ideological organisation Moses, Jesus, Mohammed. The representation of theatre and of opera, as constitution / course of collection
Between metaphysical loneliness and subjective dissolution, the spectator of theatre and of opera feels a succession of sequences which make motives. While the classical theatre tries hard to conceive these motives a priori, by establishing ontologies of situations and of characters, we will testify stage plans which aim at "opened forms", which the spectator will feel as spatiotemporal collections.
Introduced stage plans :

All plans try to sensitise the public in the living of its own body and in our kinésthésique culture that Gretchen Schiller names the “kinésthesique field”. For this choreographer sheepskin-lined jacket, term “kinésthesique” described field the body-medium as a temporal and space dynamics based on the processes of feedback between the body and its environment. Head of the French association, mô-vi-dä, the artistic plans offer living kinésthésiques others than a simple translation of our daily living. By means of numerical techniques, they search registers of (non-linear) space-time, weights (gravity) and effort (magnetic simulation) which allow us to wonder “what is it the body ?”.

The figurale, Bober / Perec, collection Moussorgski / Hartmann On is interested in the co-productive deployment of collections, inspiring the collectors reciprocally. Here, collections are writings, opening so, by artists' inspiration. Let us surprise this phenomenon in the unhappy favour of the critical abandonment of a development, by creative death (made still left trial) or, more roughly, disappearance - premature, violent of the artist.

The topic of the collection will be introduced from the presentation of two protocols of experience, which raise the education accepted then described by Carlos Castaneda in its books. These techniques integrate with the larger whole introduction in the « way of the warrior » transmitted over more than twenty years by Don Juan, a Mexican, Indian shaman Yaqui of tradition Toltèque, to the young Californian student in anthropology. After a short introduction to this education, we will keep then the techniques of summing-up and of constitution of the album of personal and unforgettable memories, from which we will try to show in what the philosophy of Deleuze, that is a thought of singularity, of life and of creation, deeply articulates with a conversion of our vision of the world, inspired partly by its meeting with the work of Castaneda.

Besides every person fills a questionnaire and describes the object from some properties and key words. On this base of linguistic description, an algorithm creates an "auto-organised" card (Kohonen) by objects and allocates them a position in the base. Algorithm assures a constant reorganisation of objects as new objects are introduced into the base.

Disillusioned Subject : supremacy and singularity in the virtual worlds.
With the exponential development of numerical transactions and of software transposition of biological, behaviour, cultural forms, the antagonism between social reality and sphere of the individual imagination gets weaker. Far from defending the other irreducible dimension " in the business world" than Herbert Marcuse called his wishes of, the new online virtual worlds assimilate Subject with an operational group and absorb him in a controlled Utopia. Reified by a commercial domestication, the faces of transcendence survive in the post technological form of "manipulated stimuli" and promises of freedom of a "Second virtual Life" (Second Life). In these persistent virtual worlds, the peculiar and the general, body and mind, artificial and natural, rational and irrational are "interchangeable objects of organisation" within the world become "the substance of a complete administration which envelops the administrators themselves" (HM, The unidimensional Man). The conquest of transcendence led by advanced industrial civilisation is well the conquest of Subject, that of menacing singularity for the particular interests hidden in the promotion of the virtual worlds.
Feeling several months of immersion in Second Life - the broadest consensual currently developed hallucination (about 6 million mishaps) - and by mentioning researches in interfaces developed for games videos immersifs, my intervention offers three approaches distinct from the notion of Singularity.
1 ° The analysis will articulate above all around the notions of Subject and of supremacy in the virtual worlds under the lighting of the theories of Herbert Marcuse on technological rationality.
2 ° Secondly, the couple of subjectivity and of synthesis will allow me a critical examination of interfaces, neural and kinesthesia, developed for virtual immersifs games and shared environments.
3 ° Singularity will finally be envisaged as ideology in the field of advanced Artificial intelligence.
Approached on the whole by three chapters of the analysis, the topic of the collection will be the revealing of a post technological culture where a vision stagehand of the world and its subjects colonizes an imagination of the insubstantial which reifies dangerously.
It is only to dissociate itself from a mécaniste and procedure ideology, who cast only the "universal form of material culture", that the development of the virtual worlds will display its multidimensional potentials.

"Mnémotechnologies, cognitive surcharge and creative experience"
The full expansion of networks " Mnémotechnologiques " visits again the question of cognitive surcharge in the artistic sphere. How tools does hypermedia question our way of receiving, of memorising and of synthetizing the "surplus" of information ? What consequences to creative process, particularly in the field of musical computer science ? By bringing back the question of the surplus of information at the origin of "creative" thought, they realise that kantian syntheses give interesting landmarks to include stakes of network thought. Between cognitive dysfunction and awakening of intelligibility, this plan tries to explore the modalities of creation of a collection of intermodal objects in numerous criteria and differentiated.
An important track of reflexion also opens with the deficit of latent inhibition (DIL), deficit of intelligibility short-circuiting husserliennes retention. The surplus of information coming from this cognitive dysfunction would disorientate and destabilise the subject not succeeding any more in including or in catégoriser in a synoptic way. While losing its "reflexes of logical operators" (Piaget) subject would find its close, native perceptive / executive experiments in it of the "hieroglyphical" writing defended by Adorno (and its "Egyptian" dialectic).
In this movement of cognitive surcharge, these new instruments hypermedia applied to art - that they considered to be the extension of hégelienne thought in the massive and hegemonic intervention of concept - would tend to detach us progressively from concepts put into play in logical classification. It is here that the phenomenon of the collection (and from DIL) occurs, this experience where it is not again possible to speak about "classes" but « empirical conventions drawn of the previous experience lived by subject ». Recent researches in psychology identified the deficit of latent inhibition as "one of the biological bases of creativity", but so that this dysfunction could have a positive effect or creative, subject must "excel" in his working memory. What is he on time where precisely these " Mnémotechnologiques " networks visit again our cognitive activities ?

Supplies and flux of pictures : for a public space of memory
On the one hand, public images or private seem to circulate more and more freely on networks. Of other one, the industrialisation of information grows to a normalisation and a concentration of the still never attained collections. In such context, on what conditions is it possible to support or to recreate a “public space of memory” ? Between supply and flux, in what pictures have we access, with which tools, which knowledges and which rights ? And what can we make with ? Is the availability of pictures enough to produce memory, to share it, to transmit it ? Should not you rather think of memory as a process of production, or even of invention ? It is hypothesis that photo and video will be developed from some assemblages, where are tested of mémorielles writings. In these assemblages, singularity feels across traces carted by the multiplicity of the systems of information, entangling imagination and document, individual and collective, history and actuality. Nomads and revenantes, pictures are always incorporated : they cross technical devices which produce a memory founding and structured, that is to say political. By maintaining that visual anthropology was the mirror of stakes major épistémologiques we follow only theses moved forward by Clifford, Marcus and Fisher, Turner and Tyler. But what are consequences of this crisis of representation within this discipline ? To allow us to answer this question we will raise a short review of this discipline widely influenced by history world politics, by the uninterrupted adjournment of used methods, and finally by the constant evolution of offered techniques. If this evolution can seem unavoidable and necessary a central question still remains to be tackled : how to give an account of reality ? While numerical technologies question our perception of the reality of a philosophical, scientific, artistic and religious point of view (DELANDA 2002, Deleuze 1985, Herzfeld 2001, Latour 1988, Levy, 1988) and while many were the artists using numerical art to be taken back and to draw inspiration from this question setting concerning for example our perception of notions such as the space / time, the film-makers anthropologists mainly appropriated these new tools as part of the broadcasting of their data, by the creation of online publications or by the production of DVD. It what seems to us significant is the almost absence of researches undertaken so much on modes of observation of the real which on given models shares it and their status within new forms of representation in circulation in our society. To allow to hire a debate on these new forms of representation given to the film-makers anthropologists, we will introduce extracts of the DVD accomplished by Barbara Glowczewski-Baker called : Tracks of dreams, art and knowledge of Yapa of the Australian desert as well as extracts of writings of numerical artists.

Title of account : Practice maker of documentaries as part of a step of virtual ethnology
As part of seminar Singularity and Technology, introduced job is made up of two parts : a documentary in the course in the stage of realisation and an épistémologique and methodological reflexion. The ground is a virtual said ground. It is a question of working on the bodily involvement of the users when they communicate with hindsight via numerical technologies and electronic networks. More precisely are concerned bidirectionnels manners of the webcam (via Internet network) and the use of Messenger, software developed by Microsoft and currently free. This software allows to communicate at the same time between two persons "real-time " . The user transmits, of pictures thanks to a framing with a miniaturisée camera and, of sounds by microphone fluently included into the webcam. In the regions where the high debit is available, this practice seems in exponential growth due to costs reduced by the webcam and by the free offer of the software Messenger of Microsoft to be downloaded. This usage takes back the technological and commercial plan of the videophone for a long time postponed for the general public. Price setting is inclusive for all network high debit and gives so the "limitless" character of Messenger, compared to the model always predominant of the telephone price setting based on length. This free and permanent dimension reinforces the drawing power for the internaut and the possibility of conversing and of showing itself in a device, which resembles the television bidirectionnel live broadcasting, and this without technical team. Two users and internauts are visible in the documentary : LIZA093 AND HECTOR076. The inheritance of the ethnographic film enriches the scientific step within a will to arrest a « invisible reality » since private and private. Broadcasting anthropology accompanies other disciplines as sociology of manners, semiotics and phénoménologie. In the field currently in building that are Internet, these disciplinary crossings allow to feed exciting questionings as part of a progressive step which takes back the principles of a virtual ethnology.

Title of account : Trial for a new classification of political Regimes
The act to classify is undoubtedly also ancient as that to think. It because classification is a convenient intellectual tool, a demonstration of intelligence. She allows not only to describe, but also to understand. By her generality she allows to simplify and to level the asperity of the real world. As "prejudge « , she exempts from the analysis and reduces the time separating the reflexion of action. She allows judiciousness and choice. Know to be able. That is why classifications meet in every field of human reflexion, basic research to in daily life in purpose, not always conscious, to gain time and to sit our certainties. Political sciences as legal science is of big providers and big users of classifications. To such an extent that the education of these subjects sometimes resembles a long list of classifications, their history, their pertinence and in the possibility of substituting news for them. The classification of political regimes does not infringe this tradition. The object of this article is precisely to offer a new classification. But it seems necessary before to specify notion a little.

This account was constructed as an experimental workshop where the participants are going to be confronted with their own interpretation, their projection facing shamanism and facing shamans. 1930s in the collapse of the Soviet block at the beginning of 1990s, lamas and shamans, mediators necessary to exchanges between the world of the men and that of minds, were hunted. Objects and place of worship were confiscated or destroyed. Nevertheless, celebrated secretly beliefs remained enduring. Everywhere on the Mongolian territory, they sacrifice again to minds of sources, trees and of ancestors. Extracts of films documentary accomplished in different epochs underlined both the evolution of the methods of observation peculiar to the documentary cinema and the way to receive the Shaman rituals. The last extracts were accomplished by two shamans who staged their space and their vision during their time of possession. Reactions expected from the audience allow to underline the culturally led frame in which the audience registers these ancestral practices. The productions of the shamans-film directors were widely inspired by the codes of representation scooped out within aesthetic models conceived and broadcast by the sponsors of globalisation, cause a feeling of faintness at the listeners, feeling of faintness from which a reflexion on modes of representation of the altérité is obvious.

Title of account : Concepts and classes. Critical reflexion on programming by objects
The fundamental notions of programming by objects (class, authority, inheritance) introduce a striking analogy with the traditional philosophical speech which uses the same vocabulary (by replacing "inheritance" with "general implementation"). The considerable success of this style of programming invites to wonder about the validity of this analogy. They so hope to highlight cultural pressures and limitations liable to light the practice of the computer scientists. As computer scientist, my preoccupation is "to say things" in a machine - and to be understood by her, if at all possible. This preoccupation is individual at the same time (in my activity personal programmante) and collective (I try to make easier the communication of my fellow citizens with machines). They understand since I form a line without hesitancy in the supporters of the hypothesis n ° 5 J.-G. Miller, in his variant n ° 3 :" they think only in language". I am even persuaded as they do not think in the same way in different languages, and I have sympathy as the anthropologists of difference, as this David Le Breton about whom speaks Roger-Pol Droit in the World of the Books of 17/02/06, which I read shortly after to have listened to seminar homodate. I solve this difference by letting in online of count followed purpose when "they think" : "absolute" translation is impossible, but it becomes possible if a purpose to the translated text (p is allocated. eg the text is intended to work as the instructions of some utensil). The basic experience of the programmer is that he not there no peculiar swording. I hear by "peculiar" the opposite of "general" in "There is science only of the general". The peculiar, taken in this direction, is just what matters in action : "This pedestrian is going to cross, therefore..." . A peculiar swording includes necessarily a deixis, a syntactic form which links it up with its referent, who just singles swording out. Because the swording taken in itself out of enunciative context, is hopelessly general : "This pedestrian... "What pedestrian ? It is really there the misfortune of the programmer, not to can say "This pedestrian..." . Indeed, with the machine it is not possible to cheat : the swording which is announced him is irremediably skinned of any context likely to give him and singularity and sense. The arbitrary power of interpretation is blindingly obvious of the one who writes the interpreter. The notion of constant postulated by the logicians does not have court (safe in the interpretative mechanism) and the alleged peculiar "Socrates is man" is indistinguable of the general "x man is". It is not about science, about knowledge, but about linguistic swording there, cleared of the material substrate which gave birth to it. The programmer collides with the inability of language to express singularity. It is so, for my part, as I read the "Blow of dices" of Mallarmé : the poet proclaims his failure to write a peculiar blow of dices. Let us return to seminar. Its subject touches from too close distance a major preoccupation of artificial intelligence, that of passage of "numerical" in "symbolism".
