Archives BREUIL. Between European prehistory and africanisme, an intellectual and institutional world in the XXth century

ACI "Fields, techniques, theories". Plan financed by the Ministry of Research (2004-2007)

Research programme (2004-2007) run by François-Xavier Fauvelle-Aymar (history, NATIONAL CENTRE FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, Donatecarcenter.com-Aix), François Bon (prehistory, UTAH, Toulouse-le-Mirail), Nathalie Richard (history of sciences, Paris I - Panthéon Sorbonne university), Yann Potin (archival, School of Palaeography and Archival Studies). Other members of the team are Christmas Coye (history of the prehistory, France), Fanny Defrance (history, Lyons), Carole Fritz (prehistory, UTAH, university of Toulouse-le-Mirail), Arnaud Hurel (National Natural history museum of Natural history, Paris), Marc-Antoine Kaeser (Conservative, National Museum Switzerland, Zurich), Jean-Loïc Le Quellec (cave art, France), Tim Murray (professor of archaeology, Trobe University, Australia), Nathan Schlanger (Archives of European Archaeology, AREA, Paris), Philippe Soulier (history of the prehistory, Ministry of Culture, France).

Major actor of the prehistory in Europe and in Africa, tireless passenger, inventor and surveyor of new fields, conductor between disciplines, creator and animator of institutional networks on the scale of the planet, man of faith and of science, Henry Breuil (1877-1961) was a key figure of human sciences of the XXth century. Its numerous facets are an invitation to explore a route, in a collective and interdisciplinary way, (intellectual, institutional, political, geographical...) and a teeming work which register in a cloth gripped by relations and by institutions, in the history of several disciplines, in changeable scientific and ideological contexts. The " Archives Breuil " research programme  unites prehistorians and archaeologists, historians of sciences and of ideas, africanists and specialists of the cave art, in perspective to visit again Breuil - the biography, archives, practices, theories, work. All are aware of the necessity to cross competences to give rise to new objects of study, to reread the fundamental chapters of history and of epistemology of the sciences of the man in the XXth century, - to question the theoretical frames and the practices of different concerned disciplines.

Topics and approaches favoured, without exclusive, by the programme  " Archives Breuil " are :
- the archives of the abbot Breuil (identification of funds, history, status, inventory) networks of researchers, institutionalization of disciplines, structuring of research fields
- practical science and religion of fields (notings down, collection of information, books, trips) the prehistory in the first half of the XXth century : neglected chapter of the history of the sciences of the Man
- the cave art : interpretative systems and ethnographic comparisons
- structures of knowledge : classificatoires systems, chronology, typologies, explicative modes, ethnic categories
- autobiography (writing of one, scientific testament) and biography.
