Africa and History

International magazine specialised in the history of Africa

French-speaking magazine with majority but opened to other languages it is meant to be "africanists" away from the traditional magazines where the historian (author or reader) does not find completely his count, and non-specialised magazines of history, where Africa does not still really have the right to city, Africa and History must establish itself as a magazine of reference to all historians who, on the ground, in archives or in libraries, receive Africa as legitimate field of historical discipline. But a field with its specificity. Africa and History wants to reflect, and to encourage, all transverse approaches blending history, anthropology, archaeology or else linguistics, lighting mutually the oral, material, textual sources. A big place will besides be made in iconography, that she is source or left the analysis.

Africa and history is a magazine opened to the whole Africain continent, without arbitrary caesura of linguistic, political or geographical order. Maritime interfaces (ocean Indian and Red Sea, the Atlantic world, Mediterranean) also have their place there. The magazine covers a broad chronological fan, going of antique or " archaeological time " until the present time.

The magazine is prisoner of no approach and no particular themes. She is meant to be on the contrary the reflexion of "schools", tendencies, and European and Africain historiographic traditions, of which gives an account the committee of writing. She is meant without exclusive, with for the only criterion of selection of articles that of quality, without kindness nor preferential treatment. In that capacity, the magazine institutes for all leading articles a system of anonymous reporters, to the number of two, issuing criticisms, comments and suggestions, and deciding only on the pertinence of a publication. The writing will be particularly attentive to the fact that articles include the publication of all or part especially oral, used sources, too often relegated to the annexes of university jobs or to the personal archives of the researchers.

Every number of Africa and history will include leading articles, which some will be united in a thematic file. She will also include a rubric offering a reflexion on a topic of actuality, by means of a bibliographic column, of a historiographic file, of a reflexion on a debate historian, of the study of a card or of a document, of the bet in historical perspective of an event, etc. The magazine will also include a section “tools of research” (state of archives in a domain or in a fund, bibliography, publication of sources) and finally critics of works, with worry to differentiate works to be signalled (by some lines of presentation) and works deserving an attentive reading.

Africa and History publishes mainly in French and in English, but also, occasionally, in other European languages.

Every number will include, besides articles forming a file, of varied, a column actuality (linked to a political event, a debate, ideological stakes), a column tools of research (fund of archives, libraries, computer tools, documents), a critical newsletter (reports of works).
