Speciality History of Africa, within the Master searches in human and social sciences, mention history, offers a training to the studying (e) s in two years, on four semestres, in research in history of Africa. This training appears the most complete existing in France since it covers the whole continent, the including Maghreb, where it concerns history in long length, ancient periods until contemporary epoch and where she leans back on the doctoral School of history of the university Paris 1 and on a Mixed Research unit (UMR 8171, Paris 1, NATIONAL CENTRE FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, EPHE, University of Provence), Donatecarcenter.com, laboratory admitted as one of the main search parties in this domain.
Its first vocation is to prepare studying them (e) s who want to get involved in a doctorate, while handling footbridges carefully with other Masters, especially the professional Masters offered in the Master history (« History and management of heritage », « Development and cooperation », « Preparation in the competitions of Foreign affairs »), or other Masters researches as the Master of Political sciences (speciality " Africain Studies " ) or the Master of right Right, mention compared (speciality " Africain Studies " ).

The strong points of this training
The primordial place granted in methodological seminars and participation of many researchers and teachers researchers in educations and seminars. The multidisciplinary opening, especially towards anthropology, archaeology, philology, history of art, political sciences, compared right... The development of the programme to make a true place in studies on the ground (introduction first year, internship of collection of data in second year) A compulsory linguistic training, with especially the possibility of starting to learn about the Africain languages.
First year (M1)
The accent is put on the strengthening of theoretical and methodological trainings : Seminar of the head of research (seminar of speciality) Methods of research : Sources of the history of Africa Tools of research : Historiography Disciplinary opening (other speciality or discipline) Training of a language
In the hinge of both semestres, an internship of introduction in the ground of two months allows to the student (e) to train as research in archives and/or in the collection of data on the ground.
This first year is punished, on top of notes got in seminars, by the realisation of a preparative memo in the second year, centered on problematic reflexion, edition and critical study of sources.
The second year (M2)
She is dedicated to research, to ground, and to preparation of the memo of the end of study. In the first semestre, studying them (e) s follow the training in research as part of following lessons : Seminar of the head of research (seminar of speciality) Other research seminar Disciplinary opening (other speciality or discipline) Computer science Chase of the training of a language
After a stay of ground dedicated to the collection of data (archives, written sources and oral), between December and March, the second semestre will be, mainly, dedicated to preparation and to writing of the memo of the end of study. The seminar of speciality and that of research will allow to the studying (e) s to give an account of the progress of their jobs and to supervise the writing of their memo.
Stays on the ground
The Master speciality History of Africa encourages the personal contact of the students with the Africain societies and their history, at the same time by training of Africain languages or of languages used in Africa and by the promotion of researches performed on place.
In M1, a first stay on the ground - this "ground" is not exclusively Africain, he can concern just as well centres of archives in France or in Europe - is possible, or even necessary for some subjects, but cannot be financially supported by the Master, safe in the case of prior agreements with local institutions or French centres abroad.
In M2, a research stay on place is recommended and can be financially supported by a participation in expenses, after valuation of requests by the teaching team according to available credits.
